Sojourner Truth

I am a woman
Taller than most—man or woman
Stronger than many—men or women
Mother, preacher, teacher
Speaking out against slavery
Speaking our for women’s suffrage.

I am a black woman
A slave in my previous life
Reborn to serve God and mankind
And renamed to serve notice to all.

I am an American woman
Walking across the fields and
Claiming the fruits of freedom
For every man, woman, and child.

Americas Son

In the cut and curve of his flesh is the rape by the white slave master, the mating with Native Americans, and the heritage from generations of African ancestors. In his eye is the vision of our future. In his imagination is the solution we seek. It is in keeping hope and the expectation of greatness reflected in the face of America’s son and his brothers (and sisters) that the survival of America rests.

Les Croisées

Les Croisées was conceived and executed in the midst of a throng of humanity. Although totally exposed, her crossed arms and legs are a sign of self-containment and separation. She provided a way for me to cope with ten straight days–twelve hours each day exhibiting in a popular art show.

Do you ever wonder why you are all crossed up?

La Vida Empieza Cada Dia

Whatever your experience today, you will wake to a new day and life “Life begins again each day”.

Justice Thurgood Marshall

No one man has done more in our time to extend the rights and priviledges of citizenship to ALL Americans

Just A Minute

One more window to wash—in just a minute

A child yells—just a minute

A pot boils—just a minute

A knock at the door—just a minute

Time to rest—just a minute

Time to think—just a minute

It’s Hard Work

There are men who claim that their task is hard work, but have yet to feel the satisfaction of a day’s labor as most men and women experience it day after day in the effort to feed, clothe, and shelter loved ones.

But before virtue, the immortal gods have put the sweat of man’s brow; and long and steep is the way of it, and rugged at the first.

— Hesiod 8th Century B.C.
